Invictus Choir with Gareth Malone

Did anyone see the Invictus Choir with Gareth Malone on TV?  I found it so inspiring and moving to watch the two episodes and hear their beautiful song sung in Orlando.  Hearing the different experiences and their journeys was so uplifting; it gives hope.  I completely agree that the Invictus Games gives everyone hope and inspiration, not only for physically injured people but also mentally injured, and for everyone, civilians and military people.

Extract from the Invictus Games Anthem:

I am the master of my fate
I am the captain of my sole

I was once told by a counsellor that to sort out your issues in your head, you need to open up pandoras box in your head, go through what’s in there, and then put it all back but in a logical(ish) way.  You never necessary forgive, forget or completely deal with those issues but you have started acknowledging them, you have started to understand and recognise the triggers which cause bad times / bad reactions.  Most importantly, things take time and you cannot rush the healing in the same way you cannot rush a flesh wound to heal.

I just wanted to share this song, this video, because the lyrics really moved me.

Don’t turn your eyes away and leave me in the dark

It’s so easy for people to turn away from those who need help.  I personally feel that at the moment, I cannot forgive or forget those who turned their eyes away from me during my dark moments (non work related) and when I cried for their help during the past couple of years.  But I am strong and, with my immediate family, I have learnt to love again.

So many excuses spring to the tip of the tongue when it comes to people helping with mental health issues.  By raising this publicly hopefully we won’t find people turning their eyes away from the next person who asks / cries for their help.

Flesh and Blood

Stepping out to the lead the line
I stare into my brothers eyes
Sweeping sands the men behind
We are made of flesh and blood

Frozen in the morning light
An image I don’t recognise
The mirror shows me broken bound
But I will learn to run again

Don’t turn your eyes away
and leave me in the dark
Don’t turn your eyes away

I have been strong
I have been weak
and I’ve had days I could not breathe
Back from the dust
And through the snow
We come together now

Now the walls are closing in
I can hear the cries begin
Will I ever make it through
You take me by the hand again

I have been strong
I have been weak
And I have had days I could not breath

But from the dust
and through the snow
We come together now
But from the dust
And through the snow
We come together now

I will learn to laugh again
to dream again
to hope again,

I will learn to walk again
to run again
to fly again

I will learn to live again
to feel again
to love again
I will learn to live again
To feel again
To love again

I have been strong
I have been weak
and I have days I could not breathe
oh,
back from the dust
and through the snow
we come together to love again

Invincible, Written and sung by Laura Wright

The other song sung at the Invictus Games Opening Ceremony was Invincible, by Laura Wright.  I understand she wrote it in 2014 for the inaugural Invictus Games and it’s such an applicable song for Mental Health Awareness Week in addition to the Invictus Games last week.

The part which stands out the most in the Invincible song for me is:

I am proud, I am strong
I have might and I have spirit

The lyrics are below the video:

When all is lost and hope is gone
When life is frail and hearts are weary
The echoed words unbeaten still
Will show our strength and dignity

To dream the dream of victory
To feel the fight that drives us all
To take a place in history
And bring home our hearts for thee

And when we hear those distant drums
And when we feel our hearts grow stronger
When we see the crowds draw near
Our fears dissolve, our heads hold high

To dream the dream of winners past
To feel the fight that drives us all
United strong, forever faithful
We hear the cries of victory

I am proud, I am strong
I have might and I have spirit
Sacrifice and stars are born
Unconquered still, we stand as one

To dream the dream of winners past
To feel the fight that drives us all
United strong, forever faithful
We hear the cries of victory

When we look back from where we came
We’ve found a place, we’ll rise or die
To dream a dream of victory
We feel the fight that drives us all
To victory
